Many post 16 maths learners feel that passing Functional Skills or GCSE maths is out of reach. Traditional target setting often reinforces this as goals can feel too big, too distant, and too disconnected from the learner’s day to day experience. This session introduces a different approach. In this one hour community session, we’ll explore how the principles of Atomic Habits can be applied to maths learning through “atomic targets”: small, achievable objectives that build confidence, momentum, and visible progress. Teachers will learn how to set motivating targets around maths topics, but also around resilience, mindset, and learning behaviours. We will explore how these micro targets can unlock engagement and shift learner identity from “I can’t do maths” to “I’m someone who makes progress”. We’ll look at practical examples of atomic targets for Functional Skills and GCSE resit learners, how to track progress in ways learners can see, and how to use these tiny wins to build habits that lead to real change.
